WASHINGTON COUNTY ? One of Washington County's grocery stores is being moved and expanded next year.

The Martin's Food Market in Fountainhead Plaza will close when the company opens a new branch on Pennsylvania Avenue at North Pointe Drive, where Gold's Gym used to be.

Martin's spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski said the new store will be 84,300 square feet. Construction is under way.

The current Martin's store in Fountainhead Plaza is 54,400 square feet. It opened in 1989 and was remodeled in 1996 and 2000, Pawelski said.

New branch will be largest in Hagerstown

Martin's tries to open or remodel its stores about every six years, she said.

The new Martin's branch would be larger than the other two in the Hagerstown area.

The store on Dual Highway is 57,500 square feet.

The branch on Wesel Boulevard is 65,300 square feet. It opened in 2005, after Martin's shut down another branch close by.

New site will include gas island

Pawelski said it was too soon to say what amenities will be in the new Martin's branch on Pennsylvania Avenue.

In general, though, the company's larger new stores include expanded natural and organic, ready to eat and drug sections, along with deeper product assortments throughout the store, she said.

In March, the Washington County Planning Commission approved a site plan that called for a grocery store with a gas island. Six other shops of about 2,500 square feet apiece were part of the plan.

The plan also included a traffic light at North Pointe Drive and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Pawelski said the old store likely will close on a Wednesday at 6 p.m., then the new store will open the next day at 8 a.m.

Thursday is a good opening day because it's one of the busier shopping days of the week, she said.
