Greencastle police chief could be named next month

November 30, 2007|By ASHLEY HARTMAN

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Greencastle could have a new police chief by mid-December if the Greencastle Borough Council accepts the recommendation of its Public Safety Committee during Monday night's meeting, according the chairman of the committee.

"After our meeting (Wednesday), the Public Safety Committee is prepared to recommend one candidate to hire," Paul Schemel said.

During an executive session at the council's Nov. 6 meeting, the top four candidates for police chief were revealed.

Since that time, the field has dropped to three.

"We had four candidates that we wanted to interview, (but) one of those candidates withdrew his name," Schemel said. "I think any of the three could do this job well."

The three candidates were interviewed by the full council during the week of Nov. 12, and the council asked the Public Safety Committee to review the applicants more fully, Schemel said.

The borough has not released the names of the top candidates.

"We've made telephone inquiries to various persons within the communities and working environments of the candidates that we're considering," Schemel said.

Schemel is optimistic that the council will accept the committee's recommendation.

"I think they will, because at the last meeting, the council acknowledged that they wanted to fill the position as soon as possible," Schemel said.

Even if the council accepts the committee's recommendation, the person hired will not be able to start as police chief the next day.

Before being sworn in, the person selected for the position would have to go through a psychological exam and a background check, Schemel said.

Seventeen applications were received for the police chief vacancy.

The Greencastle Police Department has been operating under the direction of Mayor Robert Eberly since Peter Mozurkevich resigned from his position Sept. 5.

The department has two full-time officers and six part-time officers.
