Teacher of the year nominations available

WASHINGTON COUNTY ? Nominations for Washington County Public Schools teacher of the year are now being accepted.

Officials with the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the Educators of the Year Awards, said that nominations for private school teachers will be available in the next few weeks.

The deadline to nominate one of the county's public school teachers is Jan. 25. Smithsburg Elementary School kindergarten teacher Gwen Pangborn was the 2007 honoree.

The winner represents the school system in the Maryland State Teacher of the Year awards program.

School system spokesman Will Kauffman said in a news release that nominations are welcome from students, parents, community organizations, businesses, colleagues and administrators. Eligible candidates for teacher of the year must be full-time classroom, resource or media teachers who spend the majority of his or her time teaching.


Kauffman said that candidates must have a minimum of five years of teaching experience, and must remain in a teaching position during the next school year.

Linda Heinrich, a staff development specialist with Washington County Public Schools, said the nomination forms will be available in schools starting today. Forms also are available at the school system's central office on Commonwealth Avenue in Hagerstown and online at the school system's Web site ?

A committee formed by the Chamber of Commerce will select the honoree from Washington County Public Schools. A panel of judges representing business, education and the community will review the nominations.

The Washington County teacher of the year will be announced at an awards dinner April 23.
