Santa Claus, elf, to appear at Family Holiday Concert

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Those unable to get tickets to the sold-out Holiday Gala of Shepherd University Music Department on Saturday night can see the same concert Sunday.

The music department's second annual Family Holiday Concert will feature performances by the school's Chamber Singers, Women's Camerata Singers, Masterworks Chorale, Men's Choir and Wind Symphony.

They'll be performing the same program that they will do for the Holiday Gala, with an exception for Sunday ? a special appearance by Santa Claus and his elf, said Esperanza Alzona, the music department's operations manager.

The Sunday concert, which will run about 90 minutes, is at the 450-seat Frank Center Theater on campus. Tickets, $10 for general admission, were still available as of Wednesday afternoon.

The vocal ensembles will perform during the first half of the show. The Wind Symphony will perform during the second half. The show will end with all of the ensembles coming together to perform "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "White Christmas," said Mark McCoy, who is music department chairman and the conductor of the Wind Symphony.

McCoy said finding music for the show was a challenge because new, quality holiday music is hard to come by. "Every year (most new holiday music) gets cheesier and cheesier," McCoy said.

The Wind Symphony will perform two tunes by Leroy Anderson ? "Sleigh Ride" and "A Christmas Festival" ? and "Greensleeves," McCoy said.

"Leroy Anderson, in my opinion, is one of the great unappreciated composers," McCoy said.

The family concert was added last year because of the popularity of the Holiday Gala, McCoy said.

"(The Holiday Gala) used to sell out in days, now it sells out in hours," McCoy said.

McCoy said the department was considering adding a third concert next year.
