Rohrersville band to give concert Dec. 9

The Rohrersville Cornet Band of Washington County will present its annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m., in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Friendship Hall, 20223 Locust Grove Road, Rohrersville.

The concert, sponsored in part by the Washington County Arts Council, is free and open to the public. Members of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church will provide refreshments.

Holly Roelkey, director, and Bob Sclater, assistant director, direct the band in this program that features traditional seasonal music.

The Rohrersville Band, Maryland's oldest community band, has been presenting concerts since its inception in 1837. This Christmas concert closes the band's 170th year. During 2007, the band gave 18 concerts and marched in 11 parades.

Sunday's program includes "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson, arranged and adapted by James Ployhar; "Jingle Bells and Jungle Drums" arranged by Mark Williams; "A Child Is Born" (15th-century English Carol) arranged by Elliot Del Borgo; "A Christmas Celebration" (medley of traditional carols) by Kenny Bierschenk; "Abide with Me" by William H. Monk, arranged by Jay Dawson.

The band will also present "Them Basses" (a march) by G.H. Huffine; "Florentiner March" (Grande Marcia Italiana) by Julius Fucik, arranged by M.L. Lake; "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli; and von Suppe's "Poet and Peasant Overture" arranged by George D. Barnard.
