Shepherd prep students win awards

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University Preparatory Division students won top prizes at the annual conference of the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, held Nov. 16-17 at West Virginia University. The annual competitions sponsored by WVMTA and the National affiliate, Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), includes students statewide competing for prize money and the chance to compete at the next level of competition for the 13-state Eastern Division.

The following junior and senior high school students of Scott Beard, associate professor of music and coordinator of keyboard studies at Shepherd University, won the awards:

Leah Claiborne was awarded first place in the MTNA Senior High School Piano Competition.

Edward Yoon received an honorable mention in the MTNA Junior High School Piano Competition.

Andrew Troxel won second place in the WVMTA Mountain State Junior High School Piano Competition.

Ian McGaughran and Jane Wang received honorable mentions in the WVMTA Mountain State Senior High School Piano Competition.

The Shepherd University Department of Music created a preparatory division to further its mission of providing music opportunities for students of all ages. The preparatory division is under the direction of Anne Munro, and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Currently with more than 200 students, the Shepherd Preparatory Division provides music lessons, early childhood classes, a youth orchestra and summer camps.
