Squirrel causes power outage in Martinsburg

November 23, 2007|By JENNIFER FITCH

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two thousand Allegheny Power customers were without electricity for three hours Thursday morning, according to a company spokesman.

"A squirrel was the culprit," Doug Colafella said.

The squirrel got into a substation and caused an electrical spark in a transformer at 8:13 a.m., he said.

"Obviously, it's an inconvenience to have a power outage on Thanksgiving," Colafella said.

Allegheny Power was well-staffed at the time, according to Colafella.

"We were in full readiness mode because a storm had come through," he said.

Power was restored at 11:04 a.m. for the affected customers, who were mostly in western Martinsburg, Colafella said.
