Celtic music and dance to mesh

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - It will be a study in collaborations at Celtic Fiddle & Feet, a weekend workshop of music and dance.

Workshops, primarily for musicians and dancers, are scheduled Friday, Nov. 16, through Sunday, Nov. 18, at Hilltop House Hotel. A free jam session and dance is scheduled for Friday night at the hotel. A concert is scheduled for Saturday at Harpers Ferry Middle School auditorium.

The concert flow Saturday will be akin to scrambling squares on a Rubik's Cube - the individual artists will play together in some form or another, said organizer Joanie Blanton.

French-Canadian trio Genticorum will open the Saturday concert and play for the first half.

Scottish-style fiddler Laura Risk will perform with Ken Kolodner, on the hammered dulcimer, after that.

Then, Risk and Kolodner likely will play with guitarist Robin Bullock. (Kolodner, Risk and Bullock once formed a trio called Greenfire.)

Fiddler Cleek Shrey will then accompany Irish-style stepdancer Kieran Jordan.

"I picked these performers because most of them are already friends," said Blanton, founder of the dulcimer fest and concert chairwoman for Shepherdstown Music & Dance, which is helping organize the event.

Celtic Fiddle & Feet replaces the Upper Potomac Irish Music Weekend, which Blanton said had drawn a low turnout.

The new event welcomes a broader base of Celtic music and adds dance to the slate.
