November 14, 2007

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) - Shepherd running back Dervon Wallace was named the West Virginia Conference offensive player of the year for the second straight season Tuesday, while Fairmont State linebacker Vince Black earned the league's defensive honor.

Shepherd's Monte Cater was named coach of the year a fourth straight time.

The awards were voted on by league coaches.

Wallace is the first repeat winner of the offensive honor since Shepherd's Damian Beane in 1988 and 1999. Wallace has two 300-yard games this season and leads Division II in rushing. His 1,952 yards are a conference regular-season record.

Black was third in the conference with 103 tackles, including a league-high 28 tackles for loss, as Fairmont State posted its first winning season since 2001.

Shepherd (9-1) won its 11th conference championship in Cater's 21 seasons. He has a 149-70-1 career record at Shepherd.

The Rams earned a first-round bye in the Division II playoffs and will play Nov. 24 at home against the winner of the game between Indiana (Pa.) and West Chester (Pa.).
