Washington County pastors break the silence on teen sex

November 14, 2007

During the month of October, evangelical pastors in Washington County participated in Let's Talk Month, delivering a series of sermons on a topic rarely addressed from the pulpit - sex.

Joining forces with the Washington County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, approximately a dozen churches focused on teen sex and plan to put some muscle behind their words by offering volunteer service to schools and groups involved in the effort to lower the county's teen sex statistics.

Rather than preaching against anything, their intent was to invite the community to discover God's amazing plan for sex, love, and a personal destiny. The pastors shared a common outline, scriptures and multi-media on the topics of The Need: Does Sex Really Satisfy Our Deepest Longing? God's Plan for Sex: God Is in Favor of It, When We Mess Up and Made for More Than Sex.

"The problem is not with our teens," stated one pastor, "the problem is with us (adults)." Recognizing the difficulty of handling a typically taboo subject, the pastor stated he had to prepare throughout the week to use the word "sex" from his pulpit!

The reason sexual sin affects us so deeply, according to the pastor, is that the soul and spirit are not left outside the bedroom door.

Pastor Bill Wyand, who heads the Evangelical Christian Leaders Network, says the messages were well-received. "The Church has a responsibility to address the difficult issues of the day," he said. "God's Word has a great deal to say about sex, and that's why we're talking about it. At the core of our being, we were all created for love, and many people think that sex will bring love, but that just isn't the case. Many of the problems people face flow out of that search for love, for satisfaction, for fulfillment in life. We believe the answers can be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ."

Participating churches were Bridge of Life, Broadfording Bible Brethren, Christ Community Church, Faith Christian Fellowship, Hagerstown Bible Church, Hagerstown Foursquare Church, Hilltop Christian Fellowship, Lifehouse Bethel Assembly of God, Lifehouse East, Lifehouse West and Tri-State Fellowship.
