Veterans visit Smithsburg Middle School

November 12, 2007

Several veterans and enlisted personnel representing different branches of the armed forces who have served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraqi Freedom were invited to Smithsburg Middle School to speak to students.

Guests visited several classes and spoke to students about what liberty, patriotism and freedom meant to them.

Many were dressed in uniform and brought along items and pictures relating to the different places they had been stationed.

Among the veterans were several members of the Smithsburg Middle School staff: Michael Kuhaneck, principal; Jesse Smith, social studies teacher; and Michelle Benda, music teacher.

Guests were presented with a certificate of honor from Kathy Edgel, para-professional and coordinator for the veterans program.

In honor of Veterans Day, a Veterans Wall was created by Stacy Bressler, art teacher, and her students. In addition to the ribbons decorated with a patriotic theme, the wall included a 4-by-6 foot flag made of 3-inch squares; each containing a name of someone who has served or is serving in the armed services.
