November 11, 2007

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Musselman's volleyball team fell three points short of the West Virginia Class AAA state title, as Parkersburg prevailed 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12 in Saturday's championship match.

"We were feeling good going into Game 4, and they got a lead on us," Applemen coach Shawn Martz said. "They played great defense in the match. ... We were tied 10-10 in Game 5 and they went on a run and nipped us in the end."

Erica Manor had 29 kills in the match and 86 in the state tournament, including a five-game victory over George Washington in the first round Friday and Parkersburg South in four games in Friday's semifinals. Katie Kees had 13 kills and seven blocks in the final, Sabina Nicewarner had 11 kills and Chelsea Wheaton finished with 48 assists. Wheaton had 141 assists in the tournament.

Manor, Kees and Wheaton each made the all-tournament team for Musselman (29-4).

"We faced GW the first round and got down 2-0 against the defending state champs and came back," Martz said. "Then we beat the team that knocked us out last year. I'm extremely proud of the girls. This is the first time we've ever got past the quarterfinals."
