Deadlines approach for voters, candidates

Two deadlines are approaching for voters and candidates in Maryland.

Voters have until Nov. 19 to change their party affiliation in time for the primaries on Feb. 12, 2008.

Candidates who plan to run in the primary have until Dec. 3 to file.

Democrats open campaign office

Washington County's Democratic Central Committee said it opened its campaign headquarters at 245 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown on Thursday.

The committee plans to have limited hours at the headquarters for the rest of the year:

- Nov. 8 to 19: Mondays and Thursdays, 4 to 6 p.m.

- Dec. 10 to 20: Mondays and Thursdays, 4 to 6 p.m.

Early next year, longer office hours will be in effect:

The office will then close until July and will return to regular office hours in August.

Washington County's Republicans don't plan to open a campaign headquarters until after the primary, said John Dunlap, the outgoing Republican Central Committee chairman.

Pittman chosen as GOP chairwoman

Penny Pittman was chosen Thursday as the new chairwoman of the Republican Central Committee.

Pittman will replace John Dunlap, whose one-year term as chairman expired Thursday.
