Santa Claus opens holiday season at Valley Mall

HALFWAY - Nine-month-old Alexis Ferguson celebrated the beginning of her first Christmas season Friday night with a trip to see Santa at Valley Mall.

Her mother, Christin Ferguson of Boonsboro, snapped pictures as they waited in line to sit on Santa's lap.

Ferguson and Alexis' father, Matthew Smith, later sat for pictures with Santa and their daughter.

Before welcoming children onto his lap to hear Christmas wishes, Santa circled the mall in a train and waved to a crowd full of children blowing on wooden whistles in honor of the event's railroad theme.

This year was the second time Santa arrived in a train, marketing director Brian Kaltenbaugh said. Santa has posed for pictures with children at Valley Mall every year since it opened in 1974, Kaltenbaugh said.

Daisy Kreps of Williamsport took her grandchildren, Mason Kreps, 9, and Chelsea Kreps, 4, to see Santa.

Chelsea managed to say she wanted a baby doll for Christmas before Santa's arrival, at which point she didn't care to answer any more questions and instead waved and pointed at the man in red.

Mason Kreps had to think for awhile before deciding he wanted an Xbox for Christmas.

Santa will be welcoming pets for photographs Monday, Dec. 3, and Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., according to the mall's Web site.

Children can have breakfast with Santa on Dec. 8. Tickets for that event go on sale at Guest Service Center on Nov. 23, Kaltenbaugh said.
