Event planner opens shop in downtown Greencastle

November 09, 2007|By ASHLEY HARTMAN

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - With a lifetime of experience in event planning, Shayna Gehring opened The Black Tie Affair, Event Planners and Gift Shop, in Greencastle on Oct. 1 to do just that.

"I think Greencastle is right in the middle of everything," said Gehring, who has planned conventions in Las Vegas, New York, Australia and Canada. "It's such a quaint, little Norman Rockwell town."

Specializing in all kinds of events, from weddings and baby showers to Christmas parties and corporate events, Gehring offers packages to customers, which range from basic event consultations to full-fledged event coordination, where she will work with a customer up to the day of the event.

The Black Tie Affair, on 21 E. Baltimore St., is also a full retail store selling unique party favors and wedding accessories.

Some of the items that Gehring sells include umbrellas with hanging jewels, hanging votive candles, centerpieces that drape all over the table and cake plateaus.

"You can come in here and do it yourself - you can rent everything from me," Gehring said. "Just about every favor out there I have - things you won't see elsewhere."

Gehring grew up helping her mother plan weddings.

"My mother was a wedding dress maker," Gehring said. "I grew up doing it - I helped my mom do all kinds of weddings."

Gehring has been in 13 weddings herself.

"I ended up planning every one of those weddings," she said. "That's kind of how I started doing it as a business."

Although Gehring has had an event planning business on the Internet for 13 years, it was only until this year that she opened up a store.

"For the last several years, I've been waiting for a business to leave the area," Gehring said of Greencastle. "It's very hard to get in this town - you have to wait for something to close."

Gehring got her wish when Cup O' Joe and Wolf's Bakery merged, leaving Cup O' Joe's former location vacant.

Now that she has her own shop, people can come directly to Gehring for her services. Gehring also has five other employees from around Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In addition to having plenty of experience with event planning, Gehring is also certified in Event and Wedding Planning from the U.S. Career Institute.

"I have taken courses in event and wedding coordination, business management and interior decorating and design," Gehring said.

Corporate events are the No. 1 event that Gehring's business organizes.

However, Gehring said personally she likes to plan weddings.

"My fort is personalization and working directly with people," said Gehring, whose inspiration for events comes from her customers.

"I try to get to know the personality of people to make the events something they'll remember," Gehring said. "As soon as I start talking to people, I get inspired."

What Gehring likes the most about event planning is that it is not one-dimensional.

"I want to inspire the customer to think outside of the box," she said.
