Waynesboro Borough Council weighs police staffing

November 08, 2007|By JENNIFER FITCH

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro Borough Council on Wednesday filled a vacancy on its police force, then proceeded with measures to pay officer salaries in 2008.

Faced with a deficit in early drafts of next year's budget, a proposal had formed to not fill the vacancy and not maintain a complement of 20 full-time officers.

However, money was pulled from elsewhere in the proposed budget to staff 20 full-time officers, Councilman Craig Newcomer said.

The council hired Tammy Shank, an officer who had previously been with the department. Councilman Richard "Dick" George voted against the hiring, saying he would prefer to make a decision after the budget had been hammered out.

Drafts of the budget presented this week show $4.4 million in revenue and $4.5 million in expenditures. That represents a $300,000 increase in expenditures over the 2007 budget.
