HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A former Frederick County, Va., teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges that he had a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old student while he was employed as a teacher in February, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said.

Eric Newman, 26, of Hedgesville, was charged with one count of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or person in a position of trust to a child, Sgt. B.F. Hall said in a news release.

Hall said the alleged encounter with the female student took place at Newman's residence in Hedgesville on Feb. 3, 2007, while Newman was a teacher at Millbrook High School in Winchester, Va.

Newman, who no longer is employed as a teacher, agreed to turn himself in after a joint investigation between the Berkeley County and Frederick County sheriff's departments, Hall said. Investigators served a search warrant at Newman's home March 11 and recovered evidence, Hall said.
