Smithsburg reports EMS activity

SMITHSBURG - For the month of October, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services responded to 101 calls for service, bringing the 2007 total to 992 calls. That's up from 901 calls during the same time frame last year.

A breakdown for the month included 23 calls within Smithsburg town limits and another 10 calls to areas served by Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Department.

The department answered eight calls in its portion of Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Company's response area. Mutual-aid calls to other counties included 23 to Frederick County, Md., and six to Franklin County, Pa.

Smithsburg EMS personnel also assisted or handled three calls in the response area of Hagerstown's Community Rescue Service. Another six calls were to the Cascade and Pen Mar areas, and 22 calls were handled outside of town limits.

Smithsburg EMS personnel took 69 patients to area hospitals during the month, and another patient was treated by personnel and flown to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Burn Unit by Maryland State Police helicopter.
