Occupational therapy program

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Penn State Mont Alto's Occupational Therapy program will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a day-long program of occupational therapy workshops that are open to the public. The celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 10.

The workshops will address topics of interest to both new and experienced occupational therapists including proposed changes to the practice framework, developing clinical reasoning and developing a professional portfolio. The workshops are open to anyone in the occupational therapy field, not just Mont Alto graduates. Contact hours will be awarded for workshop attendance. These may be used to satisfy continuing educational requirements for occupational therapy certification renewal. The cost for the workshops, including breakfast and lunch, is $30.

The event also will include an alumni celebration dinner for all Mont Alto occupational therapy alumni and current students. The cost for the dinner is $25.

Financial planning workshop

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A financial planning workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Menno Village Chapel. The workshop is hosted by Menno Haven Retirement Communities. A panel representing different financial specialties will address the following topics: economic/market overview, legal issues in financial planning, update on IRA giving, and year-end tax initiatives. There will be time for questions.

Program for those at risk for diabetes

The Washington County Health Department will offer a program for individuals who are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and individuals with diabetes. The free program will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at Washington County Health Department, 1302 Pennsylvania Ave., second floor, Hagerstown.

The "STOP" program is designed to assist people with pre-diabetes and diabetes in making important lifestyle changes. For information and to register, call Lisa McCoy at 240-313-3300 at Washington County Health Department.

These classes are provided with funding received from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

Holiday weight-management program

Healthier Jefferson County is sponsoring a holiday program to help people maintain their current weight during the holidays. Signups and weigh-in will be Tuesday, Nov. 13, through Wednesday, Nov. 21, during regular business hours at Sam Michaels Park Community Center, Jefferson County Health Department, Harpers Ferry Family Medicine Center, Gold's Gym in Charles Town, W.Va., Curves in Charles Town and Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Charles Town Athletic Center.

Participants who weigh out Tuesday, Jan. 2, through Thursday, Jan. 4, may attend a celebration held at Clarion Hotel Fitness Center. Those who have maintained their weight will be eligible for prize drawings. All participants will receive a packet of "Holiday Health Tips" for exercise and eating right. Fitness classes for all ages

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -Otterbein United Methodist Church offers fitness classes for all ages. Cardio kickboxing and Bodyglide are offered at 6 p.m. Tuesdays, followed by adult karate at 7 p.m.

Karate for children in grades four through eight is offered from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, followed by karate for children in kindergarten through third grade from noon to 1 p.m.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Chambersburg YMCA will offer the following classes:

Spin fit and strong - 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, through Wednesday, Dec. 12. Each class consists of 30 minutes of spinning and 30 minutes of strength training.
