Shepherd University has named Douglas C. Smith coordinator of educational outreach for the Office of Graduate Studies. He will be responsible for working with graduate courses and programs specifically designed for working professionals.

Smith has served as a professor at Glenville State College and recently retired from West Virginia University after 36 years of service. He was awarded senior professor emeritus at the time of his retirement. He has published 50 books, monographs and articles, most of which deal with Chinese education and family life.

Smith was a visiting professor in China for three years and has been a sponsored lecturer in Russia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and numerous universities in the United States. He was recently invited to the Harvard University College of Education to lecture and spent a week at Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts as guest professor.

Smith received his Ph.D. in history from WVU. He took his post-doctoral studies at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York. He earned a postdoctoral certificate of advanced studies in epidemiology and health care and graduate credentials from WVU in the MBA program.
