West Virginia playoffs - Martinsburg in, Jefferson out

November 04, 2007

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Morgantown qualified for the Class AAA playoffs Saturday, two days after the state Supreme Court restored the Mohigans' forfeit win against Martinsburg.

Morgantown (6-4) is seeded 14th and will face defending champion Parkersburg (9-1), the No. 3 seed, in the first round of the playoffs next weekend.

The Supreme Court last week overturned a lower court's ruling that had given Martinsburg back its wins over Morgantown and Potomac Falls, Va.

Had Morgantown failed to qualify, it would have missed the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

Martinsburg not only lost in the courts because it used an ineligible player in the first two games of the season, the Bulldogs fell to Jefferson 29-6 Friday night to tumble to 11th in the final ratings.

Martinsburg (7-3) will play No. 6 Bridgeport (9-1).

George Washington has the top seed and will play No. 16 Nicholas County.

Other Class AAA first-round matchups include No. 15 John Marshall against No. 2 University (9-1), No. 13 Nitro and No. 4 Robert C. Byrd, No. 12 Brooke and No. 5 St. Albans, No. 10 Riverside and No. 7 Capital, and No. 9 Hurricane against No. 8 East Fairmont.

Despite beating Martinsburg, Jefferson (5-5) finished one spot out of the playoffs. Bluefield and Wheeling Central had the top seeds in Class AA and A, respectively.

Bluefield will meet No. 16 Roane County. Defending champion Wayne is second in Class AA and will meet No. 15 Grafton, and third-seeded James Monroe will take on No. 14 Tolsia.

Other Class AA matchups include No. 4 Berkeley Springs against No. 13 Logan, No. 5 Scott against No. 12 Sissonville, No. 6 Magnolia against No. 11 Wyoming East, No. 7 Tyler Consolidated against No. 10 Liberty Raleigh, and eighth-rated Keyser taking on No. 9 Chapmanville.

Wheeling Central, seeking its fourth straight championship, will play No. 16 Notre Dame, which improved three spots to grab the final playoff spot.

Second-rated Williamstown will take on No. 15 Midland Trail, No. 3 Gilbert plays No. 14 Buffalo, and fourth-rated Madonna will face No. 13 Pendleton County.

Other Class A matchups include No. 5 Fayetteville against No. 12 Greenbrier West, No. 6 Meadow Bridge against No. 11 St. Marys, No. 7 Wahama versus No. 10 Pocahontas County, and No. 8 Calhoun County against ninth-rated Moorefield.
