Humane Society of Washington County offers volunteer training

November 02, 2007

A volunteer orientation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Humane Society of Washington County for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at the shelter.

The Humane Society of Washington County encourages individuals and organizations interested in walking dogs to come to the orientation. Volunteer dog walkers will be paired with dogs who match their abilities and preferences. "Our dog walking schedules will change when the time changes," said Margaret Becker, manager of volunteer, public assistance and humane education programs. "We will need volunteers to walk dogs during the daylight hours and new volunteers will need to be trained," Becker said.

Research has shown that dogs that are walked on a regular basis are calmer and emotionally healthier than dogs that are constantly kept in kennels. The result is that the dogs are happier and more readily adoptable and adjustable to their new families.
