These trick-or-treaters are clever

November 01, 2007|By BIG SYDNEY

One of the best times around the Dargan compound came last night.

It was the annual Trick or Treat night, when you never know what you might see.

I was pretty pumped. I ran out to my local candy store and United Way office, as we affectionately - or in this case, confectionately - call Sweet Charity.

I went home and threw on my costume. I was an Oakland football player who was missing at a St. Louis landmark.

I was a Raider of the Lost Arch.

Then the kids started to come for the treats.

One of the first goblins was dressed with a Washington helmet turned backwards, looking behind him.

He said he was a Redskins player at the New England game.

He told me he wanted to come dressed as a Raven celebrating a touchdown, but there was no such costume.

One kid came with a helmet on with a green spot on the back. He was carrying a football and wearing a barrel without a stitch of polyester underneath.

I was afraid to ask.

He said he was a quarterback running a naked bootleg.

Another kid came to the door dressed in all green and brown with 10 to 50 to 10 running from the top of his body to the bottom, and he was dotted with yellow hankies.

He had me stumped. I asked him what he was.

He said a Washington County high school football field.

The last kid was a topper. He was wearing a blue poncho and had this box with a long opening at the end of it. He ran to the door, stood for one minute and ran next door.

I wound up following him down the street to give him his trick-or-treat prize. I had to find out who he was dressed up as.

He said he was a Fifth Quarter crew member.
