Duffield Alumni Scholarship added to Chambersburg endowment

October 29, 2007

The Chambersburg Area School District Foundation has announced the inclusion of the Duffield Alumni Scholarship to its endowment program.

The Duffield Alumni Scholarship, in the amount of $600, will be awarded each May to a student who attended Duffield Elementary School for at least three years.

Recognizing the importance and value of education, in 2001 and 2002 parents and teachers of Duffield Elementary Parent Teachers Organization began exploring the idea of establishing a scholarship for Chambersburg Area Senior High School seniors who attended Duffield Elementary, to encourage them to continue their post-graduate education.

The first scholarship was awarded in May 2002, and the tradition has continued each year.

According to Jackie Lippincott, Duffield Alumni Scholarship coordinator, "even though the doors of Duffield have closed (in June 2007), we wanted the scholarship to continue until the last class from Duffield graduates from CASHS - which will be in 2018."

Scholarship applications, which require an essay describing the impact/memories of attending Duffield Elementary School, are available in the CASHS guidance office, to seniors who attended Duffield Elementary for at least three years and are in good academic standing, with plans to continue their education after graduation from CASHS. The applications will be reviewed by a committee of Duffield parents, teachers and past members of the Duffield PTO.

The scholarship will be awarded at the annual "Night of the Stars" awards ceremony held at CASHS in May.

In 2008, the scholarship will increase from $500 to $600, due to the overwhelming support and generosity of past alumni who attended the "Farewell to Duffield" gathering in June 2007.

"The CASD Foundation is very pleased to provide the vehicle to maintain this scholarship for Duffield graduates," said Beth Luka, executive director of the foundation. "The Foundation now administers 17 named scholarships according to the wishes and intent of the donors, as well as 10 $500 scholarships from our general endowment - an increase from last year."

Information about the foundation and its scholarship programs is available through either the CASHS guidance office or by contacting Luka at
