Pleasant Valley Elementary, Boonsboro Middle students do well in team chess tournament

BOONSBORO - It was a successful weekend for chess clubs from Pleasant Valley Elementary and Boonsboro Middle schools as they challenged other state teams at the Riderwood Scholastic Chess Tournament.

The tournament was held at Riderwood Elementary School in Towson, Md., on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The Pleasant Valley team took first place in the novice section in four rounds.

Other highlights included Ricky Guthrie scoring 2.5 points and finishing as top unrated novice player.

Aaron George and Evan Kerr also scored 2.5 points, Sierra Smith-DiLeo 2 points and Logan Roberts 1 point. Dominic Smith-DiLeo scored 2 points in the reserve section.

The Boonsboro Middle team earned a trophy for second place middle school team with team members playing five rounds.

Orin Kuehl scored 3 points and was the top unrated reserve section player. Teammates Randy Kines and Mike Carroll scored 2.5 points, Vincent Smith-DiLeo, Bryce King and Bronson King 2 points and Mark Leadingham 1.5 points.

The next tournament in which the teams will compete is Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Riderwood Elementary.

For the first time, the Washington County teams will host a tournament for the Maryland Chess Association on Saturday, April 5, at Boonsboro Middle School.
