With JuCo title in hand, Hawks head to regionals

The Hagerstown Community College women's tennis team - fresh off winning its first Maryland JuCo Conference title in program history - will compete in the Region XX Tournament this Sunday and Monday at Cecil Community College in North East, Md.

"We won the conference championship this year and we're looking forward to the regionals," HCC fifth-year coach Duc Trieu said. "If we win, we'll qualify for the nationals in Tucson, Ariz., in May. The top individuals also advance to the nationals."

There will be four Maryland JuCo Conference schools in the region tourney - Hagerstown, host Cecil, Harford and Montgomery-Rockville.

HCC, with a strong presence of Washington County talent, finished the regular-season campaign with an 8-1 record - losing only to Cecil.

Twins and Smithsburg graduates Tessa and Mia Doyle are the Hawks' Nos. 1 and 2 singles players as well as their No. 1 doubles team.

HCC's other singles players are: No. 3 Leah Mellott (Williamsport); No. 4 Theresa Mills (Clear Spring); No. 5 Amber Hendershot (Clear Spring), who qualified for nationals last year; and No. 6 Kaitlyn Beard (South Hagerstown).

Mellott and Hendershot form the No. 2 doubles team, and Brittany Shadrach (South Hagerstown) and Beard are No. 3.

"I think Leah Mellott and Amber Hendershot have an excellent chance to advance to the nationals but our goal is to go as a team, not as individuals," Trieu said.
