Cougars returning to states

INWOOD, W.Va. - Sarah Cogswell followed Tuesday's four-goal performance by scoring another four goals Thursday and adding an assist to lead No. 1 Jefferson to a 5-0 win over Buckhannon-Upshur in the West Virginia Region II championship game, earning the Cougars a second straight trip to the state tournament.

Jenny Perry had a goal and an assist and Tiffany Banks had two assists for the Cougars (17-1-3).




BOYS SOCCER



No. 3 Jefferson 1, R.C. Byrd 0

INWOOD, W.Va. - D.J. Upson scored off an assist by Zach Creamer in the 51st minute, and the Cougars won the Region II title and advanced to the West Virginia state semifinals for the second straight season.

Creamer sent a diagonal pass upfield to Upson, who beat two defenders and blasted a shot into the net for the Cougars (15-5-4). Matt Robbins made four saves for the shutout.

Smithsburg 3, South Carroll 0

SMITHSBURG - Nikki Siefert had nine kills as Smithsburg swept South Carroll, 25-11, 25-23, 25-21.

Colleen Black and Sara Rishell each had eight kills, Valerie Smith had 24 assists and Taylor Belella had 14 service points for the Leopards (7-7).

St. James 3, Berk. Springs 0

SAINT JAMES - Heather Lowery had 14 kills and 26 digs and Callan Spicher had 14 kills and 22 digs to lead St. James in a 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of Berkeley Springs.

Maggie Love added eight service points and four kills for the Saints (10-9).

Mercersburg 3, Martinsburg 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Cree Riley had 17 kills and 10 digs as Mercersburg Academy beat Martinsburg, 25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 25-10.

Taylor Riley added 12 digs and eight kills while Kelsie Cubit had 16 digs for Mercersburg.

Chestnut Ridge 3, S. Fulton 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Keena Elbin had 11 service points, four blocks and two aces for Southern Fulton in a 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 loss to Chestnut Ridge.

Christy Hill had 15 digs and five kills, Krista Gordon had 10 digs, Natasha Bard had six kills and Rebecca Schriever had 18 assists for the Indians (15-4, 10-4).

McConn. 3, Fannett-Metal 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Michelle Baker had 18 kills and five aces to lead McConnellsburg in a 25-21, 25-13, 25-21 win over Fannett-Metal.

Brittany Ott had 17 assists and Megan Eichelberger added seven kills for the Spartans (16-3).
