Breed tied for 5th in PIAA Championship

October 23, 2007

YORK, Pa. - Waynesboro sophomore Liz Breed posted a 2-over-par 74 in Monday's opening round of the PIAA Championship at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Starting on the back nine on the 5,145-yard layout for the girls, Breed posted an even-par 36 that included a pair of birdies. She came in with a 38 and finished tied for fifth place.

Rachel Rohanna, of Waynesburg, was one of three girls in the field of 24 who shot under par, taking the first-round lead with a 69.

Chambersburg sophomore Kacy Straub posted a 41-39 for an 8-over 80 and is tied for 15th.

"(Liz) was in a bit of trouble on a few of the holes, especially the greens because they are so big," said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. "She had three or four three-putts because she left some shots above the hole."

Breed tees off today at 8:10 a.m. and Straub goes at 7:50. Both are making their second state appearance.

For Chambersburg junior Nick Tornetta, the first round wasn't as pleasant as hoped.

Tornetta, who will tee off at 7:40 today, couldn't fuel any fires, shooting 40-39 for a 7-over 79 and finishing in a tie for 31st place out of the 52 boys playing Heritage Hills at 6,628 yards.
