Hagerstown ice complex offers new programs

HAGERSTOWN ? Pick-up hockey games and broomball are just a few of the new programs that the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex began offering earlier this month.

Jeff Barbour of the Hagerstown Youth Hockey Association, the organization that runs the ice complex, said Monday the new programs are being held at various times Friday through Sunday.

"We've been continually adding programs," he said. "We're resuming a normal operation."

In September, Hagerstown officials and the Hagerstown Youth Hockey Association entered into an agreement that gave the hockey league permission to run the city-owned ice complex from Oct. 1 to June 15, 2008.

The hockey league assumed operations shortly after the city terminated its contract in August with the ice complex's former operator of 10 years, the Washington County Sports Foundation.

That contract was ended because Washington County Sports Foundation officials said they had a difficult time raising enough revenue to operate the facility.

Since the hockey league took over, Barbour said it hosted a public skate Oct. 6 and, on Oct. 13, started holding public skating sessions on Friday and Saturday nights.

He said public participation gradually has increased, and ice complex officials want to offer the building as a venue for elementary school field trips to spark interest among children in ice sports.

"We want to expose kids to the ice at little or no charge," he said.

In another effort to raise interest, the ice complex will provide free skating lessons during its grand opening Nov. 10, he said.

The ice complex has not been advertised because its operators want to finish making minor improvements to the building, Barbour said.
