Returning your call

October 19, 2007

Editor's Note: Each Friday, Herald-Mail reporters and editors will answer some of the questions that are called in by readers to Mail Call. Consider this us returning your call.

Q: "This is to The Herald-Mail. When I called in my comment concerning the child being put off the bus, I said it was ridiculous, but what was even more ridiculous was that the driver was still working. When printed, the part about the driver was edited. A friend of mine also had half of her message edited. I want to know what gives you the right to censor our remarks. Don't we have freedom of speech?"

- Hagerstown

A: People are certainly free to say what they wish, but the newspaper is not required to print it. Our policy on Mail Call comments is to remove any comments we believe are potentially libelous, untrue, unfair or unkind. The newspaper always reserves the right to edit Mail Call items, letters to the editor and press releases.
