One dead in I-81 tractor-trailer fire

October 18, 2007

A person was found dead inside a tractor-trailer that left the northbound lanes of Interstate 81, traveled about 100 feet down an embankment and caught fire Wednesday night, a fire official said.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying bales of paper, left the northbound lanes and crossed the on-ramp at the Showalter Road interchange before going through a guardrail, according to John Latimer IV, assistant chief of Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Co.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. and the fire was out by 10:15, Latimer said.

Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane and the on-ramp was blocked as of 10:30 p.m.
