Va. trucker dies in fiery crash on I-81

October 18, 2007

A man was ejected from the cab of the tractor-trailer he was driving Wednesday night when it left the northbound lanes of Interstate 81, traveling down an embankment and burst into flames, Maryland State Police said.

William Lowell Batten, 52, of Fort Defiance, Va., was dead at the scene, a Maryland State trooper said Thursday morning.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying bales of paper, left the northbound lanes and crossed the on-ramp at the Showalter Road interchange before going through a guardrail, according to John Latimer IV, assistant chief of Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Co.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. and the fire was out by 10:15, Latimer said.

Troopers continued the investigation Thursday morning.
