Washington Township closes on meadow land

October 16, 2007|By JENNIFER FITCH

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Washington Township Supervisors have gone to settlement on land purchased to expand Happel's Meadow Wetlands Preserve.

The supervisors bought 7.3 acres off Pennersville Road in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., for $300,000 - a cost split between a $150,000 state grant and local funds. The property had been the site of a proposed housing development.

Developer Kylea & Associates of Mercersburg, Pa., donated $5,000 to the preservation effort at closing, Township Manager Mike Christopher said Monday.

With that, 30 total donations from the community have reached $27,860, he said.

"That's pretty amazing, folks," Christopher said.

An additional $14,000 has been pledged, he said.

The township will continue to collect tax-deductible donations to reimburse the $150,000 taken from its operating funds.
