Northbound I-81 near Hagerstown reopens after tractor-trailer fire stops traffic

October 10, 2007

A tractor-trailer fire Wednesday morning shut down northbound traffic on Interstate 81 west of Hagerstown while tow trucks cleared the scene, Maryland State Police said.

The northbound lanes between the Salem Avenue and Maugans Avenue exits were closed at about 8:30 a.m., Sgt. A.M. Smith said. As of 9:25 a.m., the highway had been cleared, State Police said.

Traffic had been slowed since the 7:58 a.m. fire was reported at the 8-mile marker, emergency officials said.

Motorists on the southbound lanes of I-81 also were reporting delays, although reasons for that were unclear.
