McPherson tosses an 821

October 10, 2007|By LARRY YANOS

Tenpin bowler Eric McPherson, competing in the Adult/Junior Summer League, tossed games of 266, 279 and 276 for his first 800 series at Turner's Dual Lanes - an 821 effort.

In the third game, the 21-year-old Hagerstown resident was not only flirting with the 800 set but also his fifth career perfect 300 game.

"After the first two games, I knew I had a shot at an 800 set and that's what I was concentrating on," McPherson said. "I had strikes in the first nine frames, and suddenly I thought about another perfect game and an 800 set."

Those thoughts diminished when McPherson left a solid 10 pin standing in the 10th frame, but he still got his first 800 set at Dual Lanes.

"I had an 804 set two years ago in a junior tournament at Lincoln Lanes in Chambersburg," McPherson said.

For the set, McPherson won $50 and a plaque from Dual Lanes and awards from the Central Maryland Bowling Association and the United States Bowling Congress.

The Preps from Dual Lanes team won the Prep Division at the 34th annual Western Maryland championship held at Greenmount Bowl in Hampstead, Md., and advanced to the national tournament in Glen Burnie, Md., where they finished fourth.

Representing the Hagerstown bowling center, the team - sponsored by Merle Vaughn - rolled a three-game series of 2,098 with handicap.

Team members included: Alexis Galvin (61 average, 193 set); Jacob Hardesty (81, 302); Jared Hardesty (59, 210); Christian Lowman (50, 211); and Jeffrey Wetzel (92, 330).

Two of the bowlers also won individual honors - Wetzel with a 330 set captured the Prep boys set award and Jacob Hardesty with a 126 game took the Prep boys game award.

Other Dual Lanes individual award winners: Hanna Copenhaver took the Juior Girls game title with a 139 and Robert Walker took the Major Boys game award of 177.

Also, the Squeaky Clean team from Turner's Southside Bowl finished second in the Major Division (16-21) with a 2,114 series. The team consisted of Sean Moats, Matt Weber, Brendon Benisek, Dylan Turner and Travis Kelley.
