Smithsburg man found dead in truck after crash on Wesel Blvd. in Hagerstown

An 81-year-old Smithsburg man was found dead inside a Ford F-150 pickup truck Wednesday after a 2:15 p.m. accident on Wesel Boulevard near Lowe's home improvement store, according to Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Dave Long.

The truck traveled down an embankment and crossed both lanes of Wesel Boulevard, hitting a tree in the median before stopping when it struck a curb on the other side, Long said.

Hagerstown Police think the accident was related to a medical condition, but will not know more until they receive the results of an autopsy, Officer Richard Wolfensberger said.

No one else was injured in the accident and no vehicles were struck, Long said.

The vehicle appeared to have come from the Lowe's parking lot, Long said. Police were trying to determine how the vehicle gained enough speed to travel down the embankment and across the median at an angle perpendicular to the road, given the small width of the section of parking lot bordering the road, Wolfensberger said. A Lowe's worker who saw the truck hit the curb said it appeared to be going 35 to 40 mph.

Police had not released the driver's identity by Wednesday night.

Wesel Boulevard was closed for about an hour for one block in each direction after the accident.

Hagerstown Police and Maryland State Police were investigating.
