No. 3 Greencastle at CV tourney

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Blue Devils finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in the 32-team Cumberland Valley Tournament on Saturday.

Greencastle finished second in both sessions of pool play. In the morning session, the Blue Devils defeated St. Pius 25-17, 25-16 and Central Dauphin East 25-12, 25-12, but lost to Garden Spot 25-17, 25-16. In the afternoon session they beat Carlisle 25-21, 25-14, split with Dallastown 26-27, 25-19 and lost to Huntington 25-17, 25-16.

The Blue Devils won a tiebreaker with Dallastown 16-14 to reach the bracket round, but fell to Hempfield 25-15 in the quarterfinals.

Julia Stein had 23 kills, Kelsey Gearhart 18 kills and Rochelle Christman 16 for Greencastle. Katie Lutz had 15 kills and seven blocks, Beth Berger had 11 kills and six blocks and Kortney Eshleman dished out 76 assists.

Mercersburg 3, St. James 2

Heather Lowery had 20 digs and 10 kills for St. James in a 19-25, 25-15, 25-21, 24-26, 15-9 loss to Mercersburg Academy.

Alina Rossini had 14 service points, Lindsey Gish had 27 assists and Callan Spicher had 14 kills and 11 digs for the Saints (6-7).

Mercersburg 3, Goretti 0

Cree Riley had 15 kills and Laura Willwerth added 22 assists on Friday as Mercersburg Academy swept St. Maria Goretti, 25-21, 25-13, 25-17.

Taylor Riley had five aces and seven kills and Cree Riley also had eight digs for the Blue Storm.




BOYS SOCCER



No. 6 Smithsburg 7, Hedgesville 1

SMITHSBURG - Steve Kretzer scored four goals and David Kurz had a goal and two assists as the Leopards clipped the Eagles.

Zach Carson and Phil Weller also scored for Smithsburg (8-2). Craig Trueblood, Adam Fay and Andy Fowkes each added an assist.

David Shaffer scored for Hedgesville (3-8-2).

James Buchanan 2, Big Spring 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Cory Zimmerman scored two first-half goals and Ryan Lum made 17 saves for his sixth shutout as the Rockets blanked Big Spring despite being outshot 19-10.

Kris Potter assisted Zimmerman's first goal in the 20th minute, and Zimmerman converted a penalty kick in the 35th for JB (8-6).




GIRLS SOCCER



No. 3 Smithsburg 2, Hedgesville 1

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Lauren Donley scored both goals for the Leopards in a victory over the Eagles.

Danielle Berk had an assist and Bethany Garnand made five saves for Smithsburg (7-2-1).

Jess Baker scored for Hedgesville (3-13-1). Alex Baker stopped six shots.
