HAGERSTOWN - A Hagerstown man was shot to death Friday afternoon at a house on the corner of East Avenue and North Locust Street, Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Paul Kifer said.

Police are treating the death of David Leonard Moore, 23, of 105 E. Washington St., as a homicide, Kifer said. Moore's body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore for an autopsy, which is scheduled for today.

Kifer said police found Moore dead Friday about 3 p.m. in the first-floor hallway of an apartment building at 101 East Ave. Police have no suspects, and the crime does not appear to be gang-related, Kifer said.

"We're asking for the public's help on this one," Kifer said.

Police Chief Arthur Smith said police went to the scene after a gunshot was heard about 1:30 p.m.

Detectives entering the home wore gloves and put coverings on their shoes.

While police combed the red brick house for evidence, bystanders kept their distance behind yellow police tape. School buses dropped off children who passed the scene on their way home.

A younger man held his head in his hands as an older woman sat on a nearby stoop, sobbing as she spoke with a detective.

"It's a bad area," said Robert Wolfe, 31, who used to live in the 100 block of East Avenue before he moved to Cannon Avenue.

When he heard a body was found on East Avenue, Wolfe said he went there to see whether it was someone he knew.

Moore's body was taken away in a van by workers from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner about 5 p.m.
