MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - At least one person was killed Friday night in an accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 near the Tablers Station Road exit about four miles south of Martinsburg, officials said.

Reported at 9:24 p.m., the accident detoured interstate traffic onto about three miles of U.S. 11 from Tablers Station Road to W.Va. 51 in Inwood, W.Va., according to Berkeley County emergency communications officials.

West Virginia State Police Trooper P.S. Kennedy was assigned to lead the investigation, according to an agency dispatcher, who indicated that at least three other officers were assisting with the accident.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Department personnel assisted traffic diversion from Exit 5 at Inwood, according to a sheriff's department official.

About five hours earlier, State Police Trooper M.S. Armentrout said that he was dispatched to investigate a second I-81 accident near the Tablers Station Road exit that also happened in the southbound lanes.

Armentrout said the driver of a truck towing another vehicle was able to talk to the trooper after the single-vehicle accident, and did not appear seriously injured before he was taken to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Information from Kennedy about a third accident reported to have happened on I-81 near the Apple Harvest Drive exit near Martinsburg was not immediately available.
