Man submits pre-candidacy papers for commission race

October 05, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. ? A Federal Hill subdivision man has officially indicated interest in running for Berkeley County Commission in the 2008 election, according to pre-candidacy filings at the Berkeley County Courthouse.

Klaus Heitmann, of 143 Confederate Drive near Martinsburg, filed a pre-candidacy statement Thursday, according to records.

Heitmann was not registered with any political party, said Bonnie Woodfall, voters registration chief deputy clerk.

Filing a pre-candidacy form allows candidates to lawfully accept contributions and make expenditures for the election if they ultimately choose to run for office. West Virginia's primary election May 13 will determine political party nominees for the general election in November.

Democrat Anthony J. "Tony" Portico submitted a pre-candidacy form and announced his county commission election bid last month.
