Area lawyers donate their legal services

In the past 12 months, 17 Washington County lawyers have provided free or reduced-fee legal service to county residents through Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service.

The lawyers are Kathleen Bailey, James Balog, Carl Disque, Catherine Drummond, Meredith Gammill, Richard Gibbs, E. Kenneth Grove, J. Gregory Hannigan, Leonard Kelly, Kent L. Greenberg, Jason Morton, Lisa Shank Poole, Philip Reiff, Tiffany Reiff, Michael Schaefer, John H. Urner and Michael Wilson.

The lawyers service is a nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost legal assistance to low-income residents in Maryland. It handles cases involving income tax disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, consumer rights, denial of public benefits, wills, deed changes and name changes.

Since its creation in 1981, 2,500 private attorneys have taken more than 40,000 pro bono cases, donating legal services valued at more than $25 million.
