BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The Apple Butter Festival, on Saturday and Sunday in Berkeley Springs, has been cooking up apple butter since 1974.

That's a lot of apple butter if you do some apple-butter math.

If one festival-goer has taken home a 5-pint jar in each of the 33 years since the festival started, he could have consumed the equivalent of 220 soda cans full of apple butter.

And there's more to come - thousands of quarts more - at this year's Apple Butter Festival, said Beth Peters Curtin, director of the Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event.

The festival draws an average of 30,000 attendees over the span of two days, Curtin said. Roughly 200 vendors are expected this year.

At least three kettles will provide fresh apple butter on the spot, and at least nine groups will be selling ready-made apple butter to festival-goers, Curtin said.

It's not just about the apples or the butter, though.

There's a parade. Bands are set to play Dixieland jazz, bluegrass and more. Kooky contests such as a hog-calling contest and a turtle race - one in which out-of-state turtles can enter - have followings all their own. There's also a beard and mustache contest: To compete, "all you have to do is stand there and look hairy," Curtin said.

There also are baking and, of course, apple-butter contests.

In most cases, the winner gets a ribbon.

Here's what's happening at this year's Apple Butter Festival.
