In the Street expands

FREDERICK, Md. - In the Street is celebrating its 25th anniversary with extended hours and an expanded arts and crafts area.

The Frederick festival is known for its theme blocks devoted to activities and entertainment related to sports, art, history, health and fitness, kids, public safety, and other cultures.

The festival usually attracts an estimated 75,000 people, said Amy Riley, special events manager for the City of Frederick.

Typically five hours on an autumn Saturday, this year's festival will start Friday night with Light the Creek at Carroll Creek Linear Park, Riley said.

The Deanna Bogart Band will perform blues and rhythm and blues and there will be a beer, wine and food available for purchase, Riley said. The band will be joined by guest artist Ron Holloway playing tenor saxophone.

Carroll Creek will be lit that night by luminarias that will be floated down the creek, Riley said. Visitors to the free event can buy a luminaria for $2 and dedicate it to one of 12 nonprofit groups in Frederick County, Md. One luminaria will be chosen at random and the associated nonprofit group will receive all proceeds from luminaria purchases.

Festival hours on Saturday will start one hour earlier, at 11 a.m., and that night's On the Deck Party adds 2 1/2 hours, running from 4 to 10 p.m. on the roof of the Carroll Creek Parking Deck. On the Deck, which costs $10, will feature The Freddie Long Band and The Reagan Years. Attendees to the deck party must be 21 or older.

But the free festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday will have something for all ages, including five stages with 16 bands playing modern rock, country, blues, bluegrass, reggae, swing and zydeco.

A large arts-and-crafts show will be on the Celebrate Frederick block and a skateboard demonstration will be held during the festival from Sixth to Seventh Street.

About 30 vendors will be selling food, including crab cakes, oysters and lobster bisque, Riley said.

Other entertainment includes belly dancing, a Chinese dragon, a hockey-puck shootout, go-carts, a T-ball challenge, a velcro wall, jugglers, an obstacle course for children, antique fire engines and displays of medieval armor.
