Mackey named girls hoops coach at Martinsburg

October 03, 2007|By TIM KOELBLE

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - When he came to Martinsburg High School in the early 1990s, Mike Mackey dreamed of being the girls head basketball coach.

The dream did not come to fruition until Monday night, when Mackey was approved by the Board of Education to take that position for the 2007-08 season, succeeding Beth Sedlar.

"When I came here it was my dream to be the girls coach," said Mackey, who ended up taking the boys freshman program for 11 years before stepping aside in 2003. "I'm very pleased, ecstatic. I got the bug to come back."

Mackey is a physical education teacher for grades 4-5 at Mill Creek Intermediate School and an assistant varsity football and baseball coach at Martinsburg.

He is already thinking about the upcoming season, hoping for an encore of last year's 12-12 squad that went to the West Virginia Class AAA state tournament.

"I've already been looking at what players are back and I'll start to get with them," he said. "I've been doing some game-by-game research from last year. This was a team that gave Morgantown all it could handle in the state tournament.

"We are going to be an up tempo, competitive team in this area."
