MARTINSBURG, W.Va - The death last week of a man charged in the armed robbery of Summit Community Bank in Martinsburg on Sept. 18 remains under investigation, according to Petersburg, Va., authorities.

Jarad Wayne Clark, 27, of 442 Faulkner Ave. in Martinsburg, died Saturday, four days after he apparently attempted to commit suicide in a Petersburg, Va., jail cell where he had been incarcerated, a ranking Petersburg, Va., Bureau of Police officer said Monday.

The officer, who wished to remain anonymous because of a pending investigation by the Petersburg, Va., Sheriff's Department, said Clark was discovered about 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 25.

"He was the only one in the cell," the officer said.

After authorities discovered Clark, they took him to a Virginia Commonwealth University hospital, where he died Saturday after being taken off machines, the officer said.

Sheriff Vanessa Crawford acknowledged the attempted suicide, but said she could not divulge any information concerning when or how the man was discovered.

"I can say there are no criminal charges pending at this time," Crawford said of the circumstances.

Crawford's department is responsible for safety and security of inmates at the southeastern Virginia city's jail.

Crawford could not say when the investigation would be completed.

U.S. Marshals and Petersburg, Va., police arrested Clark on Sept. 24 at a city motel without incident, authorities said. He was charged with armed robbery of the bank in the Old Court House Square Plaza in Martinsburg, according to the release.
