Chambersburg's late run for the Mid-Penn Commonwealth title fell short by one match, but the Trojans closed the gap on Cumberland Valley by winning the last three conference events.

On Tuesday, the Mid-Penn holds its annual conference championships at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg, Pa. Nick Tornetta and Tyler Straub, with the leading averages in the Tri-State area, will be looking for medalist honors.

Cumberland Valley, Northern York, Hershey and Susquehanna Township were conference champions this season and will play for the Mid-Penn team title.

The PIAA state tournament will be held Oct. 22-23 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, Pa.

West Virginia states

Jefferson senior Justin Stambaugh missed out on the 2006 state event, but earned a ticket to the states this year, one of only two Eastern Panhandle golfers who will venture to Speidel Golf Course at Ogleby Park in Wheeling on Tuesday.

Stambaugh shot a 4-over-par 76 last week at Locust Hills in Charles Town, W.Va. He will be joined by Martinsburg's Jake Yoder, who shot a 78 and will go to his second straight state tournament.

The Eagle has landed

When Williamsport's Andrew Duff rattled the pin on the ninth hole at Black Rock on Tuesday, viewers from the clubhouse heard the clink, then watched in amazement as the ball dropped into the cup.

What they saw was Duff's ball landing in the hole for an eagle 2, which came from 120 yards out. The landing even ripped a small chunk of turf away from the cup.
