Longtime Phantom opens concert series

September 27, 2007|By TIFFANY ARNOLD

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Vocalist Franc D'Ambrosio, the longtime Phantom in "Phantom of the Opera," will open the Chambersburg Community Concert Association's 68th concert series tonight.

D'Ambrosio plans to sing the songs of old Hollywood during tonight's concert, entitled "Franc D'Ambrosio's Hollywood," at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

The concert association's four-concert series continues through April 2008. The next concert, Nov. 13, will feature pianist Davide Cabassi.

D'Ambrosio, known in theater circles as The Phantom guy, has crossed over as a solo artist and has been touring the country as a one-man show for the past three years.

D'Ambrosio played the Phantom role, some 3,000 times.

In a recent telephone interview, D'Ambrosio said tonight's set will introduce audiences to something new, but it won't be entirely Phantom free. "The Phantom of the Opera" - the movie - came out in 1925 (and again in 2004).

"You never leave a hit," D'Ambrosio said, quoting some advice he received from theater producer Harold Prince, who directed "The Phantom of the Opera" production at Broadway's Majestic Theatre in 1988, according to the Internet Broadway Database.

There's more to D'Ambrosio's career than "Phantom."

D'Ambrosio was cast as Anthony Vito Corleone, Al Pacino's (Don Michael Corleone) opera-singing son, in "The Godfather, Part III." He said he plans to perform music from the film.

Single-night concert tickets are unavailable for D'Ambrosio's show - as the concert association only sells subscription packages for the entire series, said Gretchen Mackey, membership secretary for the concert association.

A single adult subscription costs $40, Mackey said, and affords subscribers access to any of the four shows in the series, plus any of the shows hosted by participating concert associations in the region.

Two participating associations have upcoming shows.

The Celtic Tenors opened Hagerstown Community Concert Association 49th season Wednesday, Sept. 19. Its next show, Friday, Oct. 5, will feature the Karkowska Sisters Duo.

Waynesboro Community Concert Association will kick off its 70th season Oct. 27, with The Eaken Piano Trio (a pianist, violinist and cellist).
