Library room a research center

The Western Maryland Room at the Washington County Free Library is a regional historical research center.

The Western Maryland Room is on the second floor of the library, which is at 100 S. Potomac St., one block south of Public Square. The library has a free parking lot off Potomac Street.

The Western Maryland Room has local history books, printed in the area or written by local people.

The room has hundreds of family histories for genealogical research.

There are yearbooks for Washington County high schools dating, in some cases, to 1921, city directories dating back to the 1890s and phone books dating to 1907.

The Western Maryland Room is home to the county historical inventory of historical properties, with more than 1,400 properties inventoried.

Historical property inventories for all of the county's incorporated towns, except Hagerstown, are kept by the research center as well. The collection includes videos of historical interest, such as lectures, and maps dating to 1754.


The Western Maryland Room is open Monday from 2 to 9 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
