Washington County names top docs

September 24, 2007

Washington County Health System celebrated its physicians during the second annual Physician Excellence Awards on Friday, Sept. 14. The event, initiated by the hospital's Model of Excellence committee, honors physicians who were nominated for exemplifying excellence in six categories: service, quality, people, growth, finance and community.

Rebecca Gatian, administrative director for medical/surgical services at Washington County Hospital, chaired the event planning committee. "The Physician Excellence Awards are important because (the program) is an opportunity for staff to recognize physician excellence which strengthens the professional relationships between staff and physicians," Gatian said.

Sixty-five physicians were nominated by health system employees. Top physicians were selected from the pool of nominees in each category who best exemplified excellence in that area. Dr. Mark Baran received the service award; Dr. Narasim Murthy received the quality award; Dr. Francisco Daniels received the people award; Dr. Kerri Hesley received the growth award; Dr. Gaylen Johnson received the finance award; and Dr. Stephen Kotch received the community award.

Dr. Thomas Gilbert III was named 2007 Pillar of Excellence Physician of the Year. He was nominated by several employees in all six categories.

One person who nominated Gilbert wrote, "He is a team leader and everyone is proud to be a part of his team." Another wrote about Gilbert's efforts in organizing a free annual holiday dinner which is delivered to more than 1,000 underprivileged people in the community.

"It is a distinct honor and humbling experience to receive this award," Gilbert said. "I work with a great team of nurses and it is because of them that I received this award."
