Happy 100th birthday, Raymond Little!

September 21, 2007|By JANET HEIM

Residents and staff members from Diakon Adult Day Services at Ravenwood in Hagerstown hosted a 100th birthday party for program participant Raymond Little on his birthday on Tuesday.

Community members were invited to enjoy cake and ice cream with the centenarian.

Born Sept. 18, 1907, on a farm near Gettysburg, Pa., Little worked on that farm through his teenage years.

While visiting his cousin, who lived in Hagerstown, Little met his future wife, Margie Himes of Smithsburg, and the two married in 1935. Little joined his wife's church, St. John's Lutheran Church, where he remains a member today.

Little worked at Fairchild Aviation as a precision tool grinder. He rode his bicycle to work every day.

When asked about his secret to longevity, he said, "I never drank nor smoked. And I've always stayed busy and worked hard."

He was also an avid duckpin bowler from 1974 until about 2005 and drove a car until last year.

Little has two sons, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
